March 25th - DJ RIPLEY @ Earthly Delights

DJ Ripley is an amazing deejay. After I saw her at one of Brooklyn's legendary (on the down-low) Rubaiyat parties in 2002 I knew I had to bring her to Pittsburgh...

So I am! March 25th Facebook event page here.

BIO-> Now disturbing San Francisco, California, since 1996 Ripley has careened through 17 countries with no sign of stopping, causing total dance mayhem at events from Berlin to Boston to Bristol to Brussels to Brisbane to Belgrade, Riga to Rotterdam to Rennes, Halle to Helsinki, Cambridge to Cholula, Scezczin to San Francisco, Tallinn to Toronto, Linz to London, Paris to Prague, Melbourne to Mexico City.

Ripley's wreckstep raggaphonics slice through genres of street bass, dubstep, baltimore club music, UK garage, kuduru, hiphop, jungle, dancehall, breakcore, d'n'b, glitched-out breaks, juke, baile funk, bhangra and dub, sprouting new life on the dancefloor. On sunny afternoons, Ripley spins rocksteady.

Ripley has caused total dance mayhem in spaces like a re-purposed public lavatory underground in East London, a former commercial fishing ship off the cost of Rostock, an (initially) laid-back lounge in Oakland California, a half-squatted office space in downtown Riga, a former military airport in eastern Germany, the basement of an Indian restaurant in Bristol, the Boston Children's Museum, alongside a riverbed in Mexico, as well as warehouses and clubs across America and Europe, in most places you'd think and some you wouldn't. Ripley's used her dj skills to support the Revolutionary Afghan Women's
Association, Medical Activists of New York, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Ripley's been voted "Best Dance DJ 2009" by the Sf Bay Guardian Readers' poll, and her monthly Surya Dub won "Best Club Night 2008" in the same poll, and one year later the Guardian named Surya Dub "Best Ambassadors of Dread Bass."

She's played alongside art-music luminaries like Kaffe Matthews, noted thereminist Pamelia Kurstin, as well as beat maniacs like Asian Dub Foundation, The Bug, Drop The Lime, Vex'd, Dub Gabriel, Dizzee Rascal, Plastician, Dr. Israel, Flying Lotus, Toecutter, Mike Slott and many more.

In the world of letters, Ripley examines global and subcultural property systems through the lens of law, especially investigating how people come to think they can own music as if it was a thing and not a practice. She is a columnist on technology & rights issues for Wiretap online youth magazine. But really, Ripley wants everyone to dance.

Sept. 24th debut! ->Earthly Delights: a new monthly d.j. night @ the brillo box...

Sept 24th is the debut of my new club night the garden of Earthly Delights @ the brillo box. It will typically be on 4th thursdays, but occasionally on a different day of the month for special events (like new years eve, which I'll be doing!) It will be 10pm - 2am, with a special cocktail hour until 11:11 with drink specials. Expect more head-nodding tracks at slightly lower volumes during that time, so you can socialize with your people before the dance gets all wild...

Each month will feature a different local guest, each a resident of their own nights. As I have a really eclectic sound, the style of music the guest plays will shape the style and theme of that night... As the night grows, I plan to bring in some out of town guests where appropriate, but only when they compliment the superb local talent we have here in the (wheels of) steel city!

September 24th will feature Pete Pandemic and will be a crazy, international throwdown.

Nigerian family party

Played a gorgeous party for Adi Fapohunda... It was her 25th wedding anniversary and 50th birthday party. They had a lovely dinner, speeches and then dancing at the Shannopin Country Club. I played jazz and kora music during dinner (and a little Al Green!), and Nigerian music all night for the dance party... Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Ayefele, Koola Lobitos, Tony Allen and more... Adi requested some reggae, so i played some classic tunes and a little dancehall. Great times! I'll upload photos when I get them from the photographer...

Palestine Rocks - a benefit party...

This was a party to raise money to send someone to Palestine to do some human rights work... we raised over two thousand dollars!!! Great party, too... reggae band Man in the Street played as did singer Leslie Addis, and I provided a late night set of dubstep and middle eastern jams...

Iran Unveiled

photography by renee rosensteel

Played some great Iranian music for WYEP's hosting of two great Iranian writers... The event was Iran Unveiled, and hosted Anahita Firouz and Moniro Ravanipour... I played Persian classical music of the zarb, oud and vocal ensemble, but I also played modern sufi work like Mercan Dede and some Persian pop. good times... a testimonial from the WYEP organizer is below...

"Thanks for DJ-ing at Iran Unveiled last week. Your wonderful music really took the whole evening to another level. Moniro and Anahita really loved everything you played. We would definitely be interested in working with you in the future. It’s always great to find someone who knows their stuff and is as easy to work with as you were."

Tower of Babel after hours party

I played an event for D's Gypsy Social Aftervibe party at Your Inner Vagabond... I played an excerpt from my new mix "Tower of Babel" and several thick hours of serious dubstep and glitch-hop. The night got pretty raw... some mc's jumped on the mic towards dawn and ripped it. Definitely good times... dark dance late night.

persian panthers' norouz celebration

i played a norouz celebration (new years) for an iranian student group. it featured traditional music during dinner and modern iranian pop and dance music for a two hour dance party afterwards.

the big hits? ironically syrian pop tune by omar souleyman and justin timberlake's "sexyback"... but mostly i played iranian pop. in fact, if i went too long without playing something persian i heard about it quick from the crowd...

awesome night. excellent food, circle dancing, clapping and a big tip! a lot of the students had older and younger relatives, so it was a beautiful time of mutli-generational dancing.
