Distal, DJ Ripley visit Earthly Delights

I haven't been updating this event blog as usual because i'm too busy deejaying! :) but... here's a recap of the last two earthly delights parties...

These last two parties went off amazingly. Such great talent. Ripley's lecture was fascinating and her set was slamming. Distal blew the Brillobox away. I've never heard a more amazing crowd response than I did from his unique blend of dubstep, techno, juke & crunk.

*DJ/rupture* -->April 22nd (Earth Day!)

DJ /rupture (Jace Clayton) is pretty much my favorite deejay. His ear for the often far-flung connections between disparate music styles is unmatched. A lecturer, writer, and blogger, he's as much an ethnomusicologist and cultural theoretician as deejay and producer. His mixes Gold Teeth Thief and Minesweeper Suite were benchmarks for three turntable mixing, combining hip hop, drum n bass, dancehall and experimental sounds within a global context.

DJ /rupture picked up a strong ear for North African music during his five year residence in Barcelona, and has recently been delving deeply into Central and South American styles and traditional styles at that, not just the popular modern hybrids. He has been instrumental in furthering appreciation of the dubstep, grime and u.k. funky scene here in America, as well as being an early adopter of new global dance forms like kuduro and tribal guachero.

Acoustic music, true stories, and earth-shuddering bass. Pop, politics and pure sound. Deejay, philosopher and travel guide.

DJ /rupture is coming here.

March 25th - DJ RIPLEY @ Earthly Delights

DJ Ripley is an amazing deejay. After I saw her at one of Brooklyn's legendary (on the down-low) Rubaiyat parties in 2002 I knew I had to bring her to Pittsburgh...

So I am! March 25th Facebook event page here.

BIO-> Now disturbing San Francisco, California, since 1996 Ripley has careened through 17 countries with no sign of stopping, causing total dance mayhem at events from Berlin to Boston to Bristol to Brussels to Brisbane to Belgrade, Riga to Rotterdam to Rennes, Halle to Helsinki, Cambridge to Cholula, Scezczin to San Francisco, Tallinn to Toronto, Linz to London, Paris to Prague, Melbourne to Mexico City.

Ripley's wreckstep raggaphonics slice through genres of street bass, dubstep, baltimore club music, UK garage, kuduru, hiphop, jungle, dancehall, breakcore, d'n'b, glitched-out breaks, juke, baile funk, bhangra and dub, sprouting new life on the dancefloor. On sunny afternoons, Ripley spins rocksteady.

Ripley has caused total dance mayhem in spaces like a re-purposed public lavatory underground in East London, a former commercial fishing ship off the cost of Rostock, an (initially) laid-back lounge in Oakland California, a half-squatted office space in downtown Riga, a former military airport in eastern Germany, the basement of an Indian restaurant in Bristol, the Boston Children's Museum, alongside a riverbed in Mexico, as well as warehouses and clubs across America and Europe, in most places you'd think and some you wouldn't. Ripley's used her dj skills to support the Revolutionary Afghan Women's
Association, Medical Activists of New York, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Ripley's been voted "Best Dance DJ 2009" by the Sf Bay Guardian Readers' poll, and her monthly Surya Dub won "Best Club Night 2008" in the same poll, and one year later the Guardian named Surya Dub "Best Ambassadors of Dread Bass."

She's played alongside art-music luminaries like Kaffe Matthews, noted thereminist Pamelia Kurstin, as well as beat maniacs like Asian Dub Foundation, The Bug, Drop The Lime, Vex'd, Dub Gabriel, Dizzee Rascal, Plastician, Dr. Israel, Flying Lotus, Toecutter, Mike Slott and many more.

In the world of letters, Ripley examines global and subcultural property systems through the lens of law, especially investigating how people come to think they can own music as if it was a thing and not a practice. She is a columnist on technology & rights issues for Wiretap online youth magazine. But really, Ripley wants everyone to dance.

I Love Techno - Feb. 25th @ Brillobox

EARTHLY DELIGHTS FEBRUARY 25th =100% PURE TECHNO

It's techno time. Cold February, dark nights and banging beats. So I invited my two favorite Pittsburgh techno purveyors to join me for a night of pure, unadulterated techno...

SHAWN RUDIMAN (technoir audio) - Pittsburgh's legendary producer/live PA wizard. If you don't know Shawn's music, you need to. If you think you don't like techno, you need to hear Shawn do it live. When I heard him play at a big outdoor rave in 1999, I knew I would forever be a fan of that 4 to the floor electronic madness.

JWAN ALLEN (technoir audio) - A damn sexy deejay. His sets of techno are melodic, lush, slamming and somehow both gritty and classy. I don't know how to describe his music any better. Jwan's a rare treat.

and the resident woofer-wrecker:

JAMES GYRE (earthly delights) - Yours truly. I'll be playing on the fringes of Jwan and Shawn's sounds. Bits of minimal techno, dub techno and straight up jacking techno. BANG BANG BANG.

earthly delights: new year's eve @ the brillobox

Peace 2009 <-> Hello 2010

New Year's Eve: "a black belt & white tie joint"
$5 with all black & white threads (small color accents a.o.k.) $10 w/o

Resident D.J. James Gyre with Keeb$, Temisan Adoki, Nice Rec & Bartholomew Dylan

Seriously... this party will be beautiful. Keeb$ (stackinpaper.com, lazer crunk, fuzz) and I have been conniving secret new year's plans for months. For starters we're starting early with a potluck and cocktail reception. We'll be providing some appetizers and are encouraging people who want to eat before they drink to bring some food to share. Bartholomew Dylan's esoteric sounds & Nice Rec's deep vinyl crates of funk & soul will accompany our feasting. I'm planning on whipping up a batch of winter sangria... a spiced white wine concoction that's been received well at previous new year's events... All night we'll have a private photo booth available so you can get shot in your stunning black & white outfits. We're also transforming the Brillobox with art and installations.

After feasting Temisan Adoki, Pittsburgh's under-sung hero of the esoteric d.j. set will start the dance. He plays everything... expect techno, baile funk, electro, hip hop, b-more, wobble and classic detroit and chicago tracks. His set at Lazer Crunk this year was one of my favorite sets of the year, hands down. Then for the ball drop Keeb$ and I will blow the roof off. I've already pulled so many awesome tunes for that set. We'll have some custom, one-time only audio for the night, too! That last two hours will be dance mayhem... start 2010 by shaking your ass with us!

October 22nd - Earthly Delights "special dark edition" w/ Cutups!

for the second installment of Earthly Delights, james gyre & cutups will play a special dark night of electronic music. expect unlimited rhythms, rare sound mutations and deep bass experiments.

as usual, 10:00-11:11 will feature an opening set of unidentified fly oddities & head-knodding tracks played at slightly lower volumes, and a drink special, not yet selected...

when the dance gets started, myself and geoff will each take a set, then close with a raw tag-team where we try to kill everyone in the club.

Sept. 24th debut! ->Earthly Delights: a new monthly d.j. night @ the brillo box...

Sept 24th is the debut of my new club night the garden of Earthly Delights @ the brillo box. It will typically be on 4th thursdays, but occasionally on a different day of the month for special events (like new years eve, which I'll be doing!) It will be 10pm - 2am, with a special cocktail hour until 11:11 with drink specials. Expect more head-nodding tracks at slightly lower volumes during that time, so you can socialize with your people before the dance gets all wild...

Each month will feature a different local guest, each a resident of their own nights. As I have a really eclectic sound, the style of music the guest plays will shape the style and theme of that night... As the night grows, I plan to bring in some out of town guests where appropriate, but only when they compliment the superb local talent we have here in the (wheels of) steel city!

September 24th will feature Pete Pandemic and will be a crazy, international throwdown.
